ADAMS, Herbert

ADAMS, Herbert, American sculptor: b.Concord, Vt., Jan. 28, 1858; d. New York, N.Y May 21, 1945. From 1885 until 1890 he studied in Paris under (Marius Jean) Antonin Mercie, the noted French sculptor. In 1899 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Design, and subsequently served as its president. He also founded the National Sculpture Society, and for three terms was its president. In his refined realism and great technical skill in marble cutting he approached closely to the Early Renaissance. He was famous for his medallions and other works in relief, and for his portrait busts of women. He executed a number of public commissions throughout the United States. His tinted marbles and polychrome busts included Saint Agnes, Primavera, and A Young Lady, in pink marble, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
