ALVAREZ DE PEREIRA Y CUBERO, Jose. Spanish sculptor. born in Priego, April 24, 1768 and died in Madrid November 26, 1827. In 1799 Charles IV gave him a pension on 12000 reals to enable him to study in Paris and Rome; a statue of Ganymede which he executed in Paris in 1804 was acquired for the Prado in Madrid. He was employed in decorating the Quirinal Palace in Rome. After his return to Spain, he executed a group representing Antilochus and Memnon, which was placed in the Royal Museum and won him appointment as court sculptor. His statues of Charles IV and his consort, Queen Maria Luisa, were acquired by the National Museum, and that of Isabella de Braganza by the Prado. He also modeled portrait busts of Ferdinand VII, the duchess of Alba, and Gioacchino Antonio Rossini.
