VELASCO, Jose Maria, Mexican landscape painter born in Temascalcingo, Mexico, July 6, 1840 and died in Aug. 25, 1912. He studied art at the Academy of San Carlos, and was professor at the Mexican National Academy 1868-1907. His pictures took first place in the Paris exposition of 1889, and after a period of neglect, received new recognition in a large retrospective exhibition at Mexico City in 1942. He was a teacher of Diego Rivera.
